Therapy

HIFEM.

High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic fields. You stay fully clothed. It works muscles that are hard to work on your own, including the pelvic floor.

What it feels like.

You sit on the chair in the clothes you came in. You'll feel a firm, rhythmic pulsing in the muscles you're sitting on. It should feel strong, but not sharp. It runs in bursts with short pauses in between.

You can talk, read or just sit while your muscles work.

Many people book it for pelvic floor support. Nothing is internal, and you stay seated and dressed. If you have any questions, ring us before you come in.

In their words

“It has made a huge difference to me physically and mentally. It's given me my freedom back.”

How it works.

  • Session length

    20–30 minutes

Seated, fully clothed, with nothing to change into.

  • How often

    Two or three a week

For a few weeks. Results build over a run of sessions.

  • Mostly booked for

    Pelvic floor support

People also book it for stiff hips, a stiff lower back, and core muscles that are hard to work on their own.

HIFEM creates a focused magnetic field. It passes through your clothes and skin and makes the muscle contract. This is why you can stay dressed.

It can produce thousands of contractions in a session. That's more than you could do on your own. It also reaches muscles that are hard to contract on purpose. The pelvic floor is one example. Many people can't feel it well enough to exercise it properly.

As with any muscle work, results build over a number of sessions. Book one session first to see how you find it.

What people use it for.

Pelvic floor support is the main reason people book HIFEM. How soon you notice a difference varies from person to person.

Pelvic floor support

  • May help with leaks on coughing, sneezing, running or lifting, including after pregnancy and through menopause
  • Helps you use your pelvic floor muscles in everyday tasks and during exercise
  • Helps the pelvic floor and deep core muscles work together, which may take some strain off the back and hips
  • Men use it too, for the same pelvic floor and core support

Everyday energy

  • Your muscles work while you sit
  • Reaches muscles that are hard to contract on your own
  • Many people say they feel energised afterwards

Circulation

  • Working muscle can support blood flow and lymphatic drainage

Muscle and joint comfort

  • Helps ease stiffness in the hips and lower back after long periods of sitting
  • Supports comfortable joints and easier everyday movement
  • People often find their hips and lower back feel looser afterwards

Common questions.

Do I have to undress?

No. You stay fully clothed for the whole session, pelvic floor sessions included.

What does it feel like?

You'll feel a firm, rhythmic pulsing in the muscles you're sitting on. It comes in bursts with short pauses. It should feel strong, but not sharp. We start low and turn it down whenever you ask.

How many sessions before I notice a difference?

It varies. Some people find their hips and lower back feel looser after the first session. For the pelvic floor, it usually takes a few weeks of regular sessions.

Is this the same as doing pelvic-floor exercises?

No, and it doesn't replace them. With exercises, you contract the muscle yourself. HIFEM makes the muscle contract for you, which helps most if you find the muscle hard to feel. Keep doing your exercises and follow any advice from a women's health physio.

Can I use it if I have pelvic pain, or a prolapse?

Speak with your GP or a pelvic health physio before booking.

Is this a medical treatment?

No. It's a wellness session to work your muscles and help with movement and everyday comfort. We don't diagnose or treat medical conditions.

Who should not use it?

Anyone with a pacemaker, neurostimulator or other implanted electronic device must not use it. If you're pregnant, have metal implants or have had recent surgery, talk to your GP before booking. If a doctor or other clinician has told you to avoid electromagnetic exposure, you should not use it.

Tell us about any of these before you book. If there's any doubt, we'll wait until your GP says it's OK.

What if I have a metal implant or an old injury?

Tell us about every implant and surgery, however long ago. Some metal implants are fine and some aren't. We follow your GP's or surgeon's advice.

Can I book while pregnant, or while trying to conceive?

Speak with your GP first. We won't go ahead during pregnancy unless your GP has cleared it. If it's not advised, we'll suggest one of our other therapies instead.

How soon after having a baby can I use it?

Wait until after your six-week postnatal check, and only once you've been cleared for exercise at that check. When you book, tell us if you had any tearing or a caesarean section. We'll make sure it's suitable for you before your first session.

Is it safe, and are there side effects?

It is generally well tolerated by anyone who passes the checks above. Some people notice brief tingling or mild tiredness in the muscles afterwards, like after a light gym session. A member of our team supervises every session, and we stop if anything doesn't feel right.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Most people feel loose afterwards. A few people notice a mild heaviness in the muscles, like after a light workout. It goes within a day. Drinking water and moving gently usually helps.

Can I train on the same day?

Yes. Many people book it on a light training day or after their main workout.

Can I combine it with the other therapies?

Yes, and most of our regular clients do. For example, some people book hyperbaric oxygen in the morning, infrared in the evening, and fit in HIFEM or a massage around those. Tell us what your week looks like and we'll help you space them out.
